Meet the teacher – Mr. VanSchepen
Our theme verse for the year comes from Deuteronomy 7:9, it says “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.” I love that our theme is centered on God’s faithfulness. Throughout my life I can pinpoint many instances where God has been faithful to me and my family.
I am Canadian and grew up in Ontario in a small town called Woodstock. Family has always been extremely important to me. God has been extremely faithful in giving me a loving father and mother who have taught me how to live for Christ. My parents still live in Canada and we often enjoy heading across the border to see them. I have been so fortunate over the years to have parents that will do anything to help me, including bringing lots of Canadian Pepsi to Michigan. After going through the Christian school system in Woodstock, I followed in the footsteps of my older brother and sister and headed for Calvin College. I was very nervous to be so far from home, but God was extremely faithful in instilling some close lifelong friends in my life. When I was half through my sophomore year I had finally found God’s calling that I should become a teacher. By my junior year I was well on my way to getting my Bachelor’s degree in Education and a minor in Physical Education. Trusting God’s plan was a huge step in becoming the person I am now.
Midway through my time at Calvin is when I was lucky enough to find my best friend and future wife Ashley. God was so good to us in merging our paths to one, and bringing us together. We were married in 2006, and have not looked back since!
The first summer after graduating from Calvin, God once again showed His faithfulness to me. I was offered a teaching job at Calvary Schools of Holland, one week before school started. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Calvary. I enjoyed the small school aspect along with the community of parents and teachers that I became close to, God richly blessed my time at Calvary.
One of the most difficult times of my life was when my wife Ashley and I we were attempting to grow our family. There were many challenges along the way, but through prayer and trust in God’s timing we were blessed in 2015 with two beautiful babies, Henry and Charlotte. We have enjoyed the blessings and hardships of being new parents to twins, and look forward to the adventures that will come in the future.
Shortly after having Henry and Charlotte I found myself being called away from Calvary into a new school. That next fall marked my first year at Borculo. I have enjoyed by time at Borculo immensely. The staff, parents, and students have made me feel extremely welcomed in the first few years. I look forward to teaching God’s word to students of Borculo for many years. God has been truly faithful throughout my whole life.
